7.4.5 Underwater measurements

The KATERINA autonomous NaI(Tl) detector unit has been designed for underwater measurements. The detectors are mounted in an integrated electronic design (incorporating memory and a microcontroller) together with batteries ensuring the autonomy required for continuous and long term operation (∼1-3 months).

Dose rate and gamma spectrometry measurements can be conducted in different scenarios (submarine ground discharges, industrial areas, pre-operational studies, baseline information, among others) to determine the activity concentration in both water bodies and sediments.
