4.4.6 Bore-hole measurements

Bore hole probes have been extensively used in oil and mineral prospection. With the advent of high density scintillation crystals, the size of the measurement head has been significantly reduced with no loose of efficiency.
Borehole measurements allow determining the distribution of radionuclide activity through the depth. Such measurements are quite relevant to estimate the volume of tailings in buried repositories, as well as to determine the activity concentration. Borehole measurements can also be used to determine the depth distribution of 137Cs in soil erosion studies.
